Southwest Kia Tire Maintenance Guide

Southwest Kia believes everyone should be an informed customer.  So we have taken the time to compile this basic guide explaining how to check and maintain your new or used car, truck or SUV's tires.  Improperly maintained tires can lead to decreased fuel mileage, bad handling, and a poor ride.  Southwest Kia recommends you check your tire pressure every 30 days and that you visually inspect your tires on a regular basis. If you note any of the following early warning signs, we recommend you come by our Dallas service center and have a professional inspection performed on your tires today.  Southwest Kia will perform a thorough inspection of your vehicle and report back to you on possible issues that may be causing the condition, such as alignment or suspension problems, or if it is time to consider buying a new set of tires

Basic signs of tire wear
  • Cracking or cuts in the sidewalls.
  • Uneven tread wear. This can be caused by improper inflation, misaligned wheels, damaged tires, or by problems with suspension parts.
  • Bulges or blisters. If you see a bulge or blister on the sidewall, replace the tire at once. These signal potential weak spots that could lead to tire failure.
  • Excessive vibration. Tire vibration may be a sign a wheel is misaligned, unbalanced, or bent. It could also signify internal tire damage. Don't ignore vibration: Have the vehicle serviced at once.
  • Excessively worn tread. Most modern tires have tread-wear indicator bars running across the tread, which signal the minimum allowable tread depth of 1/16-inch. When the tread wears down to these bars, it's time for new tires.  See our guide below for a simple method to check your tread depth

The #1 issue with tires today is under-inflation

Surveys have shown that as many as half the cars on the road may be riding on one or more underinflated tires. Even a small pressure loss—such as 4 psi—can affect a car's handling, making it harder to control. It can also make the ride softer and the car wallow. In addition, underinflated tires lower a vehicle's fuel economy, which can cost you more money at the pump.

Tire-inflation maintenance tips
  • Don't judge the pressure by eyeballing a tire. Modern radial tires bulge slightly, making them look a little underinflated, even when they're not.
  • At least once a month, use a tire gauge to check the pressure in all four tires and the spare. A tire-pressure gauge is available for as little as $3 to $5 at most auto-parts stores.
  • Set the tires to the automaker's recommended tire pressure. This is printed on a placard in the car, either on a doorjamb, the fuel-filler door, or on the inside of the glove-compartment lid. Don't go by the "maximum inflation pressure" imprinted on the tire.
  • Measure the pressure with the tires cold, before they've been driven more than a mile or two. As the vehicle is driven, the tires heat up and the pressure rises, which makes it more difficult to set them to the correct cold-tire pressure.

Check tire tread with just a penny.

So…. you’re starting to notice some wear on your tires and you’re wondering, are my tires safe and is it time for new tires.

The first thing you need to think about is the tire's “tread.” Treads are the deep grooves in the section of the tire that actually hits the road. A tread’s whole function is to divert water, mud, snow, etc. out of the footprint of the tire. Without the tread, mud, snow – even water – would literally lift the tire off the road. The "treads" are important because they help the rest of the tire stay in contact with the road and assist in helping your vehicle stay on the road.

So it is tread depth – (the depth of the grooves in the part of the tire that contacts the road) – that will determine whether it’s time for you to invest in a new set of tires.

How do you check tire tread for yourself?
Simple. A penny will do the trick.

Just take a penny, hold it vertically with Lincoln facing you and place the dated section of the coin into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of our 16th President’s head is always hidden by the tread, you have more than 2/32" of tread depth remaining. If you repeat the penny measurement -- this time with the Lincoln memorial facing you but upside down – check to see if the top of the building is completely hidden. If so, it means you have more than 3/32” of tread depth remaining.

If you duplicate the process with a quarter and part of Washington’s head is always hidden, then you have more than 4/32” of tread depth remaining.

The Minimum safe tread depth is 2/32".  But Southwest Kia recommends you replace your tires when the tread depth is showing 4/32".  Rain and wet roads can become much more of a concern when the depth goes below the recommend levels and can significantly increase the chances of hydroplaning.  Safety is important when it comes to you and your vehicle.
